‘Stand Up 4 HE’ comedy gig (Online Session: students, key influencers, staff)

Please note – This activity carries a cost and can only be only be booked by schools or colleges.

3 of Push’s presenters also moonlight as professional comedians. In this 60 minute Zoom webcast, Lorna Shaw, Ibz Sesay and Moj Taylor, deliver an interactive hour of comedy, all themed around higher education choices and the journey from school, to navigating the degree, to employment and personal development. The session is suitable for students, key influencers and even school staff, WP, outreach teams as a really fun CPD/training session on how to engage learners with higher education.

Overall Objectives: to generate a buzz around the idea of higher education, as well as honesty about the challenges involved: emotionally, and physically. Comedy is a powerful tool to engage and help messages resonate. Push’s team of comedians use stand up (jokes and stories), challenge-the-comedian games, improv, a HE-themed quiz (with forfeits attendees get to vote on), plus chances for attendees themselves to ask the performers questions about their respective higher education journeys: such as the struggles, the rewards, the reasons they chose it, the employability skills and attitude developed, and the connection to employment. The event is hosted by professional screenwriter Aron Tennant. All 4 are seasoned Push presenters, with 1,000s of sessions under their belts, and they portray a wonderfully diverse range of backgrounds (ethnic, cultural, religious) who were all the 1st generation in their families to choose and navigate higher education.

Safeguarding / GDPR: all participants’ answers are kept anonymous to all others, in the chat or in the Q&A, and all mics/cameras are off for the online ‘audience’. The teacher is made a host alongside Aron and Moj, and only hosts can control these settings. Hosts can also monitor all chat, or any concerns raised by a student, that the school can then follow up with the individual or their parents. We require no student email addresses for this session: the teacher sends out the link shortly before the session (to ensure minimal chance of students circulating the link). We ensure this is a sustained and progressive activity, with a followup summary sent to attendees. Push can immediately block or eject any attendee based on behaviour. The teacher can take a live register of all attendees through the session. All presenters have enhanced DBSs.
