Ignite Your Journey

We are very excited to announce that the applications are now open for Ignite Your Journey, starting October 2021.

Ignite Your Journey is a new project for Year 11 students, aimed at expanding access to the University of Southampton for young care experienced and looked after children. The aim of this programme is to build students’ confidence in thinking about their future, having the resources to explore their options, and developing key skills to aid the transition to further education and beyond, including:

– Research
– Innovation
– Decision making
– Communication
– Presentation

This programme is broken into two distinct parts.

The first part is a 6-week group-based project. Students will work virtually in small groups mentored by 2 student mentors. They will take part in weekly 1-hour group meetings to work on the project. The project task will be set by a faculty so the task will be related to a specific subject area. This is to offer the students an idea of the variety of subjects that can be studied at university. The mentor will support the students in producing a piece of work at the end of the 6 weeks. This may be a short video, virtual poster, or PowerPoint presentation. We will have a launch event where we will introduce mentors and mentees, as well as the group project. We will then have a celebration event, to recognise the students’ hard work. At this point, they will be introduced to the 3-week e-mentoring opportunity using the Brightside platform.

During the 6 weeks, we will be running a virtual university talk for students, their carers and advisors.

We will cover:
– Choosing the right course
– Applications
– Finance and support (including specific support for care experienced students)
– A talk from a care experienced alumnus

The second part of this programme involves an on-campus revision skills day. The students will receive sessions on English and Maths GCSE revision and study skills. Following the revision visit there will be another opportunity to access e-mentoring for up to 3 weeks. This would be a great time for students to ask the mentors for revision tips following on from what they might have learnt during their visit.
