Providing Evidence To Support Your Student Finance Application

When they first apply for their finance, students need to provide SFE with details or evidence to confirm their identity and their parents or partners may also need to supply evidence of their income and marital status.

Evidence is required so all applications can be assessed accurately.

For example, if you are a UK national, what identity and residency evidence will you need to provide?

If you have a valid UK passport, you can give us these details on your application form when you apply for your funding

If you do not have a valid UK passport, you’ll need to send one of the following:

Your original UK birth or adoption certificate

Your original certificate of Naturalisation/Registration

Identity evidence cannot be a digital copy and must be valid on the date we receive it and as we need to see your original identity evidence, this must be sent via post.

Although there are helpful notes on our application forms, it can be confusing to know exactly what evidence you or your parents or partners will need to provide and how to provide it.

If you need any additional guidance then please visit our new page on GOV.UK which covers the evidence SFE will need along with a short film which explains how a lot of the evidence documents required can be digitally uploaded directly from online SFE accounts.
