Writers in Conversation with Prize-Winning Writer Patrice Lawrence

Patrice Lawrence, an author who has been awarded an MBE for books including the novel “Orange Boy, will discuss “Diver’s Daughter: A Tudor Story,” a book set in Southampton, with Carole Burns, the University of Southampton’s head of Creative Writing.

“Diver’s Daughter,” based on a true story, focuses on Eve and her mother, who was stolen from her family in Mozambique as a child. When they hear from a Mary Rose survivor that one of the African free-divers who was sent to salvage its treasures is alive and well and living in Southampton, mother and daughter agree to try to find him and attempt to dive the wreck of another ship, rumoured to be rich with treasures.

As Lawrence, who grew up in an Italian-Trinidadian family in Sussex, talks with Burns about her work, and you ask her questions yourself, you can hear how Lawrence explored Southampton to research this novel, and how she shaped real-life historical events into a story relevant to our times.

This event is part of the English department’s Writers in Conversation series, a wonderful opportunity for readers and writers to learn about writing and the creative process.

The event will broadcast on YouTube Live (UoS Festival and Writers in Conversation) and on Facebook Live (@UoSEngagement).
